The Deciding Game

Oct 02, 2013 -- 9:12am

This Saturday’s game between the University of Northern Iowa and North Dakota State University is much bigger than an early October matchup should be. Matchups of this magnitude are usually reserved for later in the season.

“You remember November” is a type of mantra that I’ve heard used to describe that month and how impactful conference games played in that month are to a team’s season overall. Rarely does a game in October come back to bite you.

In the case of the Panthers and the Bison, however, this game means much more than just an October Missouri Valley Football Conference game. This game is pretty much for all the marbles.

When you look at what NDSU has done through their first four games, all victories, you are extremely confident in saying they most likely won’t lose to a Missouri State or Southern Illinois. You are marking “W” by the rest of the teams on the schedule.

For UNI, an October 26 meeting with South Dakota State University may be their only undoing the rest of the year. Otherwise, it is an easy road for the Panthers. Fans in Cedar Falls, Iowa are marking “W” beside UNI’s upcoming opponents as well.

That is why this game will decide the future for both teams. For UNI, a win in the Fargodome most likely pushes them to the number two team in the nation. Win out from here and you have home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The same can be said for NDSU if they were to win over UNI. Retain your number one ranking, win out and the Fargodome becomes the gateway to Frisco. You also have to take into account how much this game means for recruiting.

Both head coaches, Craig Bohl for NDSU and Mark Farley for UNI, recruit the same area. NDSU tackle Billy Turner had a brother play for UNI and NDSU cornerback Marcus Williams had to cover his high school teammate in Terrell Sinkfield for UNI.

It seems odd to be putting this much emphasis on only the first conference game for the Panthers and the second for the Bison. Many, including those in both programs, would caution over the type of hype I am putting on this game.

I just can’t look at this game and not see a de facto MVFC championship game. You can tell me all you want about it being a long season and there are other teams in the Valley. To me, this is thee game. To me, there is no game larger than this game.

If you have never been to the Fargodome, I hope this game is your first trip and I hope you are well rested. At the end of this one, we are going to know who will win the MVFC. I guarantee it.
